Today we will talk about how to register motorcycle in Korea South.
If you read this article before buying motorcycle you probably already know that for motorcycle registration in Korea you need 3 documents:
- 신부증사본 – copy of seller’s ID
- 자동차양도증면서 – document of transferring ownership rights
- 이륜자동차 사용폐지증명서 – it is deregistration document
First step – Insurance
First step you need to make an insurance for your motorcycle.
There are a lots of different insurance companies in Korea, but not each of them insures motorcycles.
I usually use “DongBoo Hwajae” insurance company. Their phone number is 1588-0100. They insure motorcycles for sure and have good pricing policy DB Insurance website link is here Korean only.
By the way don’t be afraid of visiting officials by yourself even if you have few words in your Korean vocabulary.
Here in Korea people know their job, and they will help you in the best possible way for you.
And you will have amazing experience and sometimes very good connections.
We don’t have a number plate yet, so insurance at the first stage would be made using your motorcycle frame number.
How much does it cost to make an insurance on your motorcycle? Well It depends on what expenses will insurance cover, and accident free riding experience.
I took the less expensive one and it cost 326,520KRW for first year and 225,960KRW for the next year and 149,800KRW for year three.
You have to pay for insurance before going to registration office.
Insurance document look like that:

Second step – Registering motorcycle
Take this three documents and insurance and go to the Vehicle Registration Office in Korean – 차량등록사무소

BTW here you can meet old people who can fill documents for you for 10000KRW.
But if you use examples below you can safe money for something good.
The next step I went to vehicle registration office and fill the form 이륜차동자 사용신고서 which is in English “Declaration of Use” I guess.
In previous documents you were “Buyer” now I declare you the “Owner”. Congrats!!!))
This is the form using data in your ID, here is example:

Give officer filled form, insurance and all three listed previously documents and it is time to pay.
How much does it cost to register a motorcycle in Korea?
Overall you have to pay 5% of motorcycle price plus extra for service and number plate:
- Acquisition tax 3% (of motorcycle price)
- Registration fee 2% (of motorcycle price)
- To officer 3000KRW by cash only
- Number plate 4000KRW by card only
- So for motorcycle worth 4.950.000KRW I paid:
- Acquisition tax – 148.500KRW
- Registration fee 99.000KRW
- Officer 3000KRW
- Plate 4000KRWTotal registration fee is 254,500KRW + Insurance 225,960KRW = 480,460KRW
For foreigner is much easier to pay by cash to cashier there, otherwise you need to deal with terminal machine for tax payment using bank card. That’s doable but a little complicated for the first time.
After obtaining number plate make sure to let your insurance company know digits on it, in most cases you don’t need to ride to the office, just send photo of the plate on your bike to mobile number of insurance employee.
And that’s it! After registration you obtain that document of registration.
